How does change affect your business model?

Steps
- Use the Business Model Canvas to create a sketch of your business model.
- Agree on a time-span you want to consider in the future (e.g. 2 years).
- Shuffle all the cards (you can also make a random selection of 50 cards).
- In turns, pick a card from the deck.
- Use the Patterns of Change card. Select the pattern that applies to the selected card.
- Discuss the effect this force and pattern have on the building blocks of your business model, and write it down.
- Repeat until you have discussed enough forces. Then discuss how robust your business model is and where it needs adjustment.

- After the STEEP cards, add forces from the meso (transactional) environment.
Stress testing a business model

Duration 30 – 90 minutes

Steps
- Map out your existing business model on the Business Model Canvas.
- Select the cards that are relevant to your organisation and market.
- In turns, place a card on the building block it most affects and name the pattern of change.
- Discuss whether the building block holds up or breaks under pressure, and note the vulnerabilities.
- When all relevant cards are played, determine together where the business model is most vulnerable and which adjustments make it more robust.
